Gutting Freyja’s Room

Renovating Freyja’s room started with a complete gutting back to the bare floor, wall frames, and rafters. This blank slate allowed us to plan a magical space that would delight and inspire. The demolition phase involved removing all old materials with care to avoid damaging the underlying structure, laying the groundwork for a fresh start.

Removing Old Materials

The initial step was to strip the room of its old lining boards, skirting boards, and architraves. This process was meticulous and labor-intensive, ensuring that we preserved the structural integrity of the walls and floors. Removing these elements exposed the bare frame, ready for the next stages of transformation.

Adding Structural Support

With the old materials removed, we reinforced the walls with additional timber, focusing on the corners and key areas that needed extra support. This reinforcement was essential for creating a sturdy frame that could support the built-in wardrobe and the unique tunnel entrance to Freyja’s magical fairy room.

An Imagination Gets You Outside the Box

We framed in the built-in wardrobe, which featured two side-by-side regular swinging doors. This involved precise measurements and careful installation of the studs and supports to ensure the wardrobe was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The regular swinging doors added a touch of classic charm to the design.

Creating the Majestic Tunnel

One of the standout features of Freyja’s room was the entrance door accessed through the built-in wardrobe via a square set hard-edged tunnel. This tunnel was drywalled in to resemble a majestic passage leading to a fairy room. The detailed work involved ensuring clean lines and smooth finishes, making the tunnel a magical gateway.

Rewiring for Lighting and Electrical Outlets

We updated the electrical wiring to cater to the new lighting needs. Four LED downlights were installed in the main room, along with a two-LED light rail above the bedhead and a ceiling fan for comfort. Additional power sockets were strategically placed around the room to accommodate modern electrical demands, ensuring functionality without compromising on style.

Installing Drywall and Decorative Elements

Next, we installed new drywall, carefully cutting and fitting each piece before securing it to the frame. Federation-style cornices, skirting boards, and architraves were then added to restore the room’s classic charm. Each element was meticulously measured and cut to fit perfectly, ensuring a seamless and professional finish.

Painting Freyja’s Room

Painting brought Freyja’s room to life. The walls were painted a light grey, while the architraves were given a darker grey hue to create a subtle contrast. The skirting boards and doors received a gloss white finish, adding a touch of elegance. The ceiling and cornice were also painted white, enhancing the room’s brightness and giving it a clean, cohesive look.

Final Touches and Completion

With the painting complete, the final touches were added. The LED downlights, ceiling fan, and light rail were installed and tested to ensure proper operation. The new power sockets were fitted, providing ample outlets for modern conveniences. After a week of living in a semi-finished construction site, Freyja’s room was finally complete. The space now featured a blend of modern functionality and fairy tale charm, creating a beautiful and inspiring sanctuary for Freyja.
